Couple wanting to get pregnant

The most important tip for getting pregnant: No pressure

Once you have decided to have a child together, many couples feel it can't happen fast enough. Ideally, you'd like to snap your fingers and presto!, a little miracle is growing in your belly. We understand that.

However: You should not build up pressure, stress, and too many expectations as a couple if you want to get pregnant. Stress is actually counterproductive (see tip number 6). Take it easy, enjoy this exciting time, the intimate moments between you, and the precious togetherness.

Our tips for getting pregnant only form the basis and are no guarantee for your baby happiness. Because every couple is different. For some it works right away, others take longer. So stay calm. And if you do feel the pressure every now and then, always remember: the reason why you want to get pregnant is beautiful.

How do I get pregnant?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. Many factors influence whether and when a woman can have a baby. Especially if you have previously used hormonal contraception, such as the pill.

Then it can take some time until the hormone balance is regulated so that fertilization of the egg is even possible. Other factors, lifestyle, habits, sperm quality, and even nutrition also have an influence on fertility.

Knowing your own cycle

Even if you are not using contraception, you cannot get pregnant throughout your entire cycle. In fact, a fusion of sperm and egg is only possible if you have sex during your fertile days. Usually, this is a maximum of six days per month.

You should therefore know exactly when you had your last period and when your fertility window is open. You can keep a cycle diary or use an app for this. It is also helpful if you keep an eye on your temperature. During the first half of the cycle, your temperature is usually around 36.6 degrees.

Shortly after ovulation, it rises by at least 0.2 degrees and remains slightly elevated in the following days. This allows you to determine even more precisely when fertilization is possible. If you have sex during this time, the probability of getting pregnant increases significantly.

Stop contraception in good time

If you have previously relied on condoms or copper coils for contraception, there is little you need to consider. The female cycle is hardly influenced by these "mechanical" contraceptive methods. With hormonal contraceptive methods such as the pill, things look a little different.

Here, it takes some time for the female organism to regain its natural fertility. The hormone balance must first rebalance itself. Plan for this and wait a few months after stopping the pill until the cycle normalizes. Then your body should also be ready for pregnancy.

Balanced diet and exerciseIt is no myth: a balanced and vitamin-rich diet is important when it comes to getting pregnant. Because sperm and egg cells like a healthy and fit body. And that, by the way, applies to both of you. You should focus on a nutrient-rich diet.

So plenty of fruit, plenty of vegetables, sufficient whole-grain products, nuts and legumes; two liters of water or unsweetened tea, as well as fish twice a week, eggs three to four times a week, dairy products and/or meat. Vegans and vegetarians, in turn, should get their protein from plenty of legumes, nuts, grains and potatoes.

A combination of these foods is ideal: for example, rice with beans and seitan or spaetzle with lentils. Green vegetables, certain nuts and seeds in turn serve as great sources of iron for a vegan or vegetarian diet.

A balanced diet should be supplemented by sport and exercise. Daily long walks or light jogging sessions are already sufficient. Moderate exercise helps with blood circulation and gets the metabolism going. On the other hand, excessive exercise sessions are not recommended. This can affect the hormone balance.

Getting pregnant: Tips for dietary supplements

If you like, you can supplement your balanced diet with certain preparations. Folic acid in particular is popularly known as the "pregnancy vitamin" and is essential for cell division and the growth of cells as well as maternal tissue.

Many women already take folic acid in tablet form before pregnancy. Zinc, in turn, plays a key role in maintaining normal fertility and reproduction. Vitamin B6 supports hormonal activity. And selenium is relevant for normal sperm formation. You can, but do not have to, resort to dietary supplements. It is not harmful.

Avoiding alcohol and nicotine

Alcohol is a cellular toxin and has negative effects on your fertility. In women, it can lead to cycle disorders and sluggish maturation of the egg cells. In men, alcohol affects testosterone levels. The quality, agility and number of sperm are impaired. They become sluggish.

You should also ideally refrain from smoking. In women, estrogen and progesterone levels are lowered. The consequence: cycle disorders. In fact, the probability of conception is up to 40% lower in female smokers. In addition, the lining of the uterus becomes thinner due to smoking. It is harder for the egg cell to implant itself.

In men, cigarette consumption can lead to erectile dysfunction. Furthermore, smoking also has a negative influence on sperm quality and quantity.

Regular sex to get pregnant

Reduce stress and give your body rest

As mentioned at the beginning, stress and hectic pace should no longer find a place in your everyday life if you want to get pregnant. And this also includes the pressure of expectation that you might place on yourselves during this phase.

The thought "I want to get pregnant" should not dominate you. Give yourselves and your bodies time. Treat yourselves to sufficient breaks, finish work on time, relax (together or alone) and bring peace into your life.

Good sleep: Why recovery is so important

This tip for getting pregnant goes hand in hand with that: pay attention to good sleep. On average, you should sleep between 7 and 9 hours. This is because our body breaks down stress hormones during sleep. It regenerates itself, and this can also have positive effects if you are trying to conceive.

Regular sex promotes fertility and closeness

That's good news, isn't it? If you have sex regularly (at least once or twice a week), you stay healthy on the one hand. In addition, sperm production is promoted.

"Practicing" for having children can therefore be a lot of fun. Around ovulation, you can enjoy a little more togetherness. It helps if the woman has an orgasm. This is because the uterus contracts during a female climax, allowing the sperm to be better transported to the egg cell.

Sperm quality: An often underestimated factor

And while we're on the subject of sperm: the hopeful dad should avoid too much heat, long baths, and frequent sauna visits for the time being. This is because increased temperatures can cause sperm to slow down and their mobility to be restricted.

In addition, lifestyle factors also affect sperm quality. Smoking, regular alcohol consumption, stress, and lack of sleep can negatively influence the number, shape, and mobility of sperm.

A balanced diet, sufficient exercise, and enough rest, on the other hand, have a positive effect. Wearing very tight clothing can also increase the temperature in the testicular area and should be avoided if possible.

Important to know: The formation of new sperm takes around three months. Lifestyle changes therefore do not show an immediate effect, but can make a decisive difference in the long term.

What is the best age for pregnancy?

Nature has designed it so that the female body can get pregnant most easily between the ages of 20 and 30 and can also cope best with pregnancy during this time.

But don't panic. Women are still fertile and can get pregnant beyond the age of 30. Usually even without problems, even if fertility declines. In men, by the way, fertility decreases around the age of 40. If you have difficulties getting pregnant even after trying for a long time, it is worth checking physical indicators for both of you.

Getting pregnant: Get tips from your gynecologist

In any case, discuss your desire to have children with your gynecologist. Many risks and even topics such as infertility can be discussed well in advance and possibly even resolved.

To summarize all the tips for getting pregnant in one sentence: Live a balanced and healthy life. Sleep well, have regular sex, stay relaxed and in a good mood. And then everything will certainly work out with your desire to have children. Enjoy the time! It is so exciting and beautiful.

FAQ

What helps you get pregnant faster?
The most important factor is timing. Fertile days are the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm survive for up to five days, while the egg cell only survives for about 12–24 hours. Regular sex every 2–3 days, especially in this window, maximizes the chances. A healthy lifestyle additionally supports fertility but is no substitute for good timing.

What promotes getting pregnant?
A stable hormone balance and good general health. This includes a normal body weight, a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and as little stress as possible. Smoking, alcohol, and other drugs are proven to reduce fertility in both partners. For men, factors such as sperm quality, heat (e.g., frequent sauna visits), and general health also play a role.

How long should you stay lying down to get pregnant?
In short: It is not necessary. Studies show that staying lying down after sex makes no relevant difference. Sperm are very fast; they reach the cervix within a few minutes. If you want to lie down and relax for 5–10 minutes afterwards, it won't hurt, but it is not a biological must.

What should I do before I get pregnant?
Preparation on several levels makes sense:
Take folic acid (at least 400 µg daily) even before pregnancy to reduce neural tube defects.

Have your vaccination status checked (e.g., rubella, varicella). Discuss chronic illnesses and medications with a doctor. If possible, stop smoking and drinking alcohol beforehand. Cycle tracking over several months helps you understand your own body better.

How high is the probability of getting pregnant per cycle?
Even under ideal conditions, human reproduction is surprisingly inefficient. For healthy couples under 35, the probability of getting pregnant in a single cycle is about 20–30%. This means: Several cycles without pregnancy are completely normal and not an indication of a medical problem.

Statistically speaking, around 80% of couples become pregnant within a year if they have regular unprotected intercourse. Only after 12 months (for women over 35 after 6 months) is it medically referred to as an unfulfilled desire to have children and a medical evaluation is recommended.
